Toxteth Food Central, Liverpool

HL worked with local social enterprise Squash Nutrition to design their new timber framed community food hub in Toxteth. The charity works with the local community to promote food-health and well-being, with the new hub providing access to sustainable and affordable produce to those often culturally marginalised from  good food.

 

The new building provides a shop selling sustainable affordable produce, a café, training facilities for urban agriculture and a community ’food-lab’ kitchen.

 

HL were responsible for the civil and structural design from concept to completion, including supporting Squash Nutrition in securing a grant from the Social Investment Business. 

 

The building incorporates a number of sustainability initiatives, which include the use of a recycled foam glass aggregate used as the sub-base below the reinforced concrete raft slab.
