Smithills School, Bolton

HL were appointed as the structural engineer for the project at Smithills School to install 12 zoned heating plants throughout the school.  The project included the decommissioning of the existing boiler and plant and refurbishment of pupil toilets and new build swimming, changing room facilities.

The structural works included a new load bearing masonry structure to form changing rooms and a large new knock through to provide connectivity between a new viewing area and the pool. Forming the knock through was challenging as it involved the removal of infill masonry which provided lateral stability to the building. To overcome this HL designed an innovative cast in-situ box frame installed using Pynford stools which reduced the cost of temporary works and also H&S risks.
