Plas Carmel, Pontypridd

HL were appointed as the civil and structural engineer to prepare designs to support a Heritage Lottery Fund for the proposed restoration of this grade II* listed chapel and also adjoining dwelling.

Capel Carmel, one of Llŷn Peninsula’s most remarkable chapels, is situated in a designated heritage area in Pontyridd. This unique Baptist Chapel dates back to the early 19th century, combines a chapel and chapel house.

Nearby stands an old shop that was built in the early 20th century. A project is planned to restore the buildings for use by the local community, and for the house to be let.

The building has extensive deterioration due to rot and beetle infestation and major issues with the ground floor and joinery in the chapel arising from it’s construction directly onto water logged ground. HL worked with the architect and conservation officer to develop a scheme to record and log the floors before removal and reinstatement once damp proofing measures had been undertaken to ensure deterioration of the floor and joinery will be arrested.

The site is located off mains sewerage resulting in the need for a new packaged sewage treatment plant.
