HL were appointed as the consultant structural and civil engineers to provide design information for this project in Birkenshaw.
The project involves demolition of a section of the school, followed by construction of a new two-storey classroom extension, housing twelve classrooms and a set of changing rooms.
A braced steel frame is proposed, founded on traditional RC pad and strip foundations. Cantilever steelwork sections are proposed at first floor and roof levels to minimise the risk of clashes with existing building foundations and to simplify the connection to the existing school.
The complex demolition and connection to the existing building at ground and first floors required close coordination with the architect and other members of the design team to achieve client satisfaction.
The building was modelled in 3D using Autodesk Revit and coordinated using BIM models provided by the Architect.
