Bodnant Gardens, North Wales

Bodnant Gardens is a National Trust Gardens in North Wales which received over a quarter of million visitors a year. HL were appointed as Civil and Structural engineers responsible for the design of a major project to provide new facilities for the horticulture team on the site as well as improved offices for staff.

The only area available for the new accommodation was a sloping site in a heavily forested area with limited access. HL worked closely with the trust and Architects Donald Insall Associates to design a large horticulture building to house machinery and equipment that was set into the hillside. The building was configured to minimise the number of mature trees which had to be removed and to protect root protection zones for those which were to be retained.

The new office accommodation was provided in a former head gardeners cottage which was in an extremely poor state of repair. Structural works included re-configuring internal layouts and a new extension.
